Volunteers Needed in Community

Several organizations have put out a renewed call for volunteers. Please consider whether any of the following volunteer roles might interest you and contact the organizations directly for more information.

The Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center (NLEC)

The Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center is looking for volunteers to provide academic support to students most typically in grades K – 5. We occasionally have older students who also seek help. Homework Club meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 – 5. There are also other volunteer opportunities during the academic year. These can include leading of after-school clubs (book clubs, drawing, knitting, cooking, etc.) that meet weekly or monthly and “family mentors” to work with low income families.

Leeward Light is a non-profit charitable thrift store. Their mission is to recycle, reuse and renew for charity. They process and sell donations from the community to feed, clothe and warm local families. In 2013 they were able to donate over $135,000 in cash and goods to local charities. They rely heavily on the hard work of volunteers and are always looking for energetic new team members. Volunteers needed to help with programming or events. The mission of Newburyport Youth Services is to create quality programming and events for our city’s youth in safe and supportive environments that encourage growth, self exploration and empowerment. The department also acts as an advocate for the youth, so that their ideas, concerns and needs are heard and addressed by the community of Newburyport.

We are a volunteer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing poverty and alleviating its devastating impact on individuals and families in the Greater Newburyport Area.
